There’s denim and denim. From chic to retro, from sexy to super-cool, from bohemian to glammed up, there are virtually hundreds of styles and denim types, not to mention the thousands of brands that produce denim garments and accessories.
Just a few weeks ago I read somewhere that at least three pair of jeans are sold every second only in the UK. I love jeans, but I think that, while the offer is extremely wide, the changes in sizes and manufacturing often mean that you don’t often get what you paid for.
Things are changing though and this is thanks to a few designers who have started producing perfectly tailored denims. One of them is Glasgow-based Robert Watson, the designer behind the Rabii Denim label.
I first heard about him from Camille Lorigo, the owner of Che Camille, who mentioned Watson to me last summer while she was planning a major relocation from the outskirts of Glasgow to the city centre. I was lucky enough to finally have a chat with Robert – Rab for his friends – at the new Che Camille boutique at the end of last year. Rab told me how he became a designer, showed me his creations and explained me what makes him passionate about tailored denims. “My best customers are those people who ask me to design something unique for them, something I haven’t done before, because they put me to the test and this makes me feel brilliant,” he claimed in that occasion.
To know more about Rabii Denim you can read my interview with Robert Watson on Dazed Digital or you can visit Che Camille’s site.
