It’s only a coincidence, but in a way it’s symbolical: in 1949 Emilio Pucci launched his first beachwear collection in Capri, based on black-and-white prints by Guido Ravasi of Como. Exactly fifty years after that collection was launched, the Pucci fashion house has opened its first virtual boutique, selling (for the time being) the maison's Spring/Summer Cruise 2009 collection. Available online starting from today, the virtual boutique will carry a selection of ready-to-wear garments and accessories which will arrive online at the same time as they will be in the proper Pucci shops.
The design of the Virtual Boutique is modern and subtly characterised by Pucci kaleidoscopic prints. The selection is wide and features dresses, coats and jackets, trousers, tops, beachwear and accessories. Clicking on an item will also allow customers to discover which other garments or accessories go well with it and create in this way a perfectly balanced Pucci look.
The looks of the in-store catalogue were modelled by professional dancers which is remarkable as this is a great way to show the fluidity of Pucci’s designs and the effects of the prints and of the cuts on the body, after all the Marquis was a great experimenter with fabrics and the effects synthetic velvets, wally pliss, jersey, light-weight crease-proof clothing and emilioform had on the body always fascinated him.
Laudomia Pucci, the daughter of Emilio and the maison's Image Director, recently stated about the site: “We are very proud to have created a unique Virtual Boutique that showcases the ethos of the Emilio Pucci brand and our shopping environment. Today luxury shopping is not just about brick and mortar stores, we believe our Virtual Boutique will be an important aspect of Emilio Pucci’s retail strategy.”
The site is powered by global Internet retailing partner for the leading fashion brands YOOX and it’s probably the first tailor-made online flagship store the company created for an Italian fashion house. In future the Virtual Boutique will also sell online-exclusive limited edition merchandise, but, for the time being, it will be a great way for Pucci fans scattered all over the world to access the designs of the fashion house.
I’m sure the infamous Pucci-obsessed Jacqueline Susann character from Andrew Bergman's film Isn’t She Great? would have loved the idea.

The Pucci online Boutique is nice. Not as special as I thought but it did concentrate on the merchandise. Nice stuff that Pucci has.
