Last week I heard that, starting from his Autumn/Winter 2009-2010 collection, the production and distribution of Milanese designer Gabriele Colangelo’s womenswear collection will be assigned to Mantua-based Castor, a company that will guarantee the young designer great quality and know-how.
Founded in 2003 by Angela Picozzi - actual owner of the company - and her sister Elena, along with a third partner, Francesca Agosta, Castor has a solid reputation in clothes-making. Angela’s father started working as a tailor in Naples when he was a teenager, her talent scout mother discovered instead Martin Margiela. Castor has also been the main force behind the success of the popular 6267 brand. It’s easy to understand why the designs that will be produced in future by the Colangelo-Castor team are expected to be highly wearable works of art.
Last week I spoke to Colangelo, who explained me how the inspiration in creating his collections could be described almost as "philological".
Colangelo sounded really enthusiastic about Castor taking care of his production line. As he told me: "The main problem of every designer is finding a company that can produce and distribute a collection, delivering it on time. This is just one of my main worries, as I’m also obsessed with quality. You can have beautiful ideas, but if you don’t have a company able to produce your designs in a proper way, your skills will never shine through. It’s a bit like translating from the classics: you can have multiple options and do a literal translation or a poetical translation. What I was looking for in my case was a solution that was artistically perfect and wearable and I realised that Castor was the only one able to provide it. I’m sure that working with them will be stimulating as I will be able to develop my creativity, while at the same time I won’t have to worry when it comes to the delivery of the collections. Castor is offering me the same opportunities they might be offering to a big fashion house and I know there aren’t many young designers out there who are given this chance."
