Mystic poet Kabir broke the barriers between Hinduism and Islam, going straight to the heart of religion. But, in a way, stylist and fashion editor of DRAMA magazine K A B I R is also breaking some barriers, that is those between kitsch and chic, ordinary and exotic, realistic and phantasmagorical.
K A B I R’s work has been featured on VOGUE Italia, L’Uomo VOGUE, Skin, Attitude, 34, Super Super and KCTV and he has appeared in various magazines such as i-D, the Sunday Times Style and Pop.
K A B I R collaborates on a regular basis with photographer Ram Shergill. The latter worked on a photography project with milliner Philip Treacy while he was still at university and was later introduced to the late Isabella Blow who led him into the world of fashion.
Shergill’s pictures and Kabir’s sense of style have brought to life some interesting photo shoots in which everything seems to be possible: male models in Walter Van Beirendonck’s clothes are turned into colourful birds and insects; singer Paloma Faith is dwarfed by a massive golden ribbon and a cascade of tulle; Alice in Wonderland-like gardens hide robotic and slightly disturbing models while an explosions of colours, surrealist poses and 3D cartoon-like props by Fred Butler provided an amazing photo shoot for Super Super.
The young stylist also designs a clothing line called KOVETED from K A B I R producing each season a limited collection of pieces, such as a pair of luxurious green/fuchsia brocade trousers with real gold thread for the Autumn/Winter 08-09 season.
K A B I R has recently styled singer and fashion icon Róisín Murphy and done the casting for her video (directed by artist Simon Henwood) for her forthcoming single ‘Movie Star’ (out on 29th September). Some of the comments on its YouTube page might not be too flattering, but I guess the video should be watched with tons of irony (especially the bit when the Daliesque lobster appears…). The video features ubiquitous Jodie Harsh, product designer Bethan Laura Wood who looks like a postmodernist Gelsomina from Fellini's La Strada and Leo Belicha as a Divine clone.
Self-assured Murphy proves once again her ability at giving a very special life to a designer's creations: in the video she wears a Roksanda Ilincic outfit from the designer's S/S 08 collection adding a touch of humour to the outfit with a miniature hat and giving it an avant-garde edge.
K A B I R’s next fashion project? Who knows. I'm sure, though, that it will be as excitingly innovative and creative as all the stuff he’s done so far.
