The street - The Sartorialist docet - is undoubtedly a great source of inspiration. Looking at what ordinary people wear, how they wear it or how they make up their own styles all over the world has recently become one of the main obsessions of fashionistas, bloggers and fashion professionals.
Yet there is another place where you can find amazing inspirations, clubs. If you happen to go to a very cool club night, look carefully around yourself to find some styles you might want to copy, or to spot somebody with model potential among the people who are moving and dancing around you. Well, at least this is what happens at the club nights organised by Paris-based Edouard Rostand.
This ex-law student turned DJ, writer and content/marketing manager for the French edition of MySpace, is better known for having launched the Parissi city guide and for organising, under the Partyanimals moniker amazing festival and club nights. If you’re not in Paris check the pics on Rostand's MySpace page to get a glimpse of some of the beautiful people at his club nights having great fun. Their style is usually eclectic, a mix of vintage and contemporary fashion, the result might be defined as casual chic with just a hint of glamour.
Rostand will be at the Shoreditch Festival this Sunday with his band Toilet Disco, and, while waiting for the Partyanimals nights to come back at the end of September, there are a few club nights you might not want to miss if you’re around Paris in the next few weeks, and there is also a very special party to re-launch Parissi planned on 9th September. Want to meet Rostand? Here’s a brief Q&A with him.
What inspired you to become a party/festival organiser?
I was born in Normandy from a hyper cool family from the French bourgeoisie. My parents are massive party organisers so I’ve always seen them partying and arranging events with fancy dress codes. They often mixed different crowds and their parties were massively rock’n’roll, so after arranging a few student parties and events, I started writing about clubbing for magazines and then began to run my own parties and festivals in Corsica.
Which are the most famous festivals you organised so far?
Calvi On the Rocks, which is in its sixth year now and it’s about summer time, dolce vita, Corsica and great bands. Another great festival is “Les Arcs On the Rocks”.
What's the most important thing of organising such festivals and club nights?
You must take care of every single detail - artists, crowds, sound system, decorations, even the quality of the drinks on offer. Everything must be perfectly arranged and balanced.
What’s the coolest thing that happened to you after organising a party/festival?
LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy thanked me in the band’s latest album.
Which was the best event your organised so far?
A knitting party for a wool brand. Believe it or not, it took place in a backyard and it featured 200 crazy knitters high on mojitos and dancing among the wool.
Did you ever meet any celebrities at the parties/clubbing nights you organised?
I often met French actors or TV stars. I’m not really into celebs, but when I performed with Toilet Disco at events such as the Cannes Film Festival or the MTV Awards aftershow party, I saw among the crowds all sorts of people, from Pierre Cardin to Justin Timberlake and Mickey Rourke. Once I was DJing at Le Baron and I suddenly realised I had Mick Jagger dancing in front of me.
Which are the best clubs in Paris?
Le Baron for friends, girls and cocktails; Social Club for its line up; Le Paris Paris for the smoking kitchen; Club 7 for your birthday; Maxim’s for Art Nouveau fans; La Scala for its '80s touch; Bagatelle for its open air parties in summer.
What do you usually wear?
I like classics such as A.P.C. jeans and Lacoste shirts, and sometimes wear funny accessories I buy from Ken Claude (55 rue de Turenne, Le Marais).
What’s the secret behind the best parties?
The best and wildest parties are those that have a DIY feel about them. This is why I love events organised by crews such as La Clique, Institut Bonheur or Favela Chic.
What do you do when you’re not working?
I spend time with my 2 daughters: they always manage to keep me very very busy!
