When we think about perfect geometries in water, American competitive swimmer and cinema's aquatic icon Esther Williams comes to mind. In her films there were indeed always fantastic choreographies with swimmers forming the most perfect and intricate geometrical figures.
But, if you fancy seeing some water geometries live, you can do so next month at the European Swimming Championships in Rome (11th – 21st August).
One of the aquatic sports that is more connected with fashion is obviously artistic swimming for the elaborate swimsuits, make up and elegance of the athletes. Besides, seeing the bodies of the athletes following their routines in the water can be very inspiring from a "geometrical" point of view.
Photographer and multidisciplinary artist Roberta Fineberg, who focuses in her art on experimentation, was inspired by this point of view when she came up with her work "Double Helix" (2021).
The image is based on a photograph of a swimmer and, to create it, the artist moved from abstract paintings. Fineberg rotated the image of the swimmer, reversed it into quadrants and formed with it a flowing mandala, a sort of celebration of movement, space, rhythm and colour, exploring the concept of infinite possibilities, while combining real life (the actual photograph of the swimmer) with the abstract technique.
The print is part of an auction dedicated to contemporary modern art closing tomorrow at Sotheby's in New York.
