Have you saved a few hundred euros to buy something "fashionable" for you, but you still haven't a clue about what you want? Well, forget trendy clothes and accessories for a second and refocus on investing on something very different – an original fashion sketch, for example.
Sotheby's is curating another auction of works from Karl Lagerfeld's collection. As you may remember from a previous post, the estate of the late designer is so huge that it was divided and auctioned off in multiple sessions.
There were a few sketches already in a previous auction, but this new section is entirely dedicated to his fashion drawings. The starting bid for a couple of ink on paper sketches from the '90s is €400 (the lowest bid in this lot), and prices, as you may imagine, vary according to the sketch.
Fashion-wise there is a bit of everything, with designs starting from the '60s, then moving onto the '70s and '80s to reach 2013. Some of the sketches are more minimalist, and feature just a quick outline of a silhouette to give an idea of what the design may have looked like in general; others seem to be more detailed, with notes and instructions.
One, an original sketch for a Chloé design from the end of the 60's – early 70's, comes in colour; another sketch is interesting for the materials used to make it, including eyeshadow.
Fashionistas who love "It" bags will be happy to hear there is also a sketch with an idea for a "deeper" Fendi baguette – "It's time for a relaunch" the designer scribbled next to his drawing. 
In a previous auction there were sketches incorporating images cut from magazines and books: one sketch in this auction features a detail from a book showing the voluminous sleeve of a historical costume. 
While this offers an insight into the mind of the designer, if you are looking for something that may provide you with a better idea of the creative process behind Lagerfeld's work, check out the set of documentation from the '60s-'70s comprising magazine clippings, studies for fashion, and mounted documents with fabrics and annotations, or a folder featuring 25 sketches with fabric swatches. 
The starting bid is higher for these lots, going from €1,900 for the set of documentation to €10,000 for the folder. So, focus on a lot you may be able to afford and forget about your trendy shopping spree, go for something more durable and arty that may be an investment for the future, rather than something that may make you look cool for just 6 months.
