The Difficult Relationship Between War and Peace in a Poster

The Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, but today there were peace talks in Istanbul and Russia stated it will significantly cut back its military activity in northern Ukraine. This is not a ceasefire, though, and western officials said they were "very wary" about Russian diplomatic promises.

It remains to be seen if the war is entering a new phase or if this is just a tactical exercise, but at the moment this condition is symbolised at its best by this poster by Polish graphic designer Tadeusz Piechura. Part of Cooper Hewitt's Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design collection, the poster highlights the difficult relationship between war and peace, as the presence of one implies the exclusion of the other, and reminds us that, often, the spectre of war hovers above peace.
