Nature is one of the main inspirations for fashion designers nowadays in both ready-to-wear and Haute Couture.
Loch Leven-based yarn manufacturer Todd & Duncan moved away from art, one of their constant inspirations, and turned to nature already in their previous collection, getting inspired by birds and by two vintage books – British Birds' Eggs and Nests by Eric Pochin (1946) and The Observer's Book of Birds Eggs (6th Ed., 1960).
Inspired by themes such as lightness and brightness, but also adventures in natures, travelling, a retro nostalgic feel, and old maps and postcards, for their S/S 23 collection the Scottish company explored the world of butterflies and in particular the book The butterflies of the British Isles by Richard South that you can also read online or download from the Wellcome Collection site.
The book is a detailed journey through the different species of lepidoptera, and it features colour plates of butterflies in vibrantly bright shades or pale nuances. There are correspondences between some of these plates and the colours of the new collection.
There are 18 new warmer and cooler colours in the main collection of 100% cashmere yarns: they go from soothing Pollen and Acacia, Copper and Bergamot, to fresh Aqua Grey, Tourmaline and Sky Blue.
The cashmere marls, in 27 new colours, bring some energy and fun with their 2-colour twists, combinations in light and bright pairings, balanced with a group of contrasting colour combos. The S/S 23 collection also features a line of versatile cotton and cashmere blends in 72 colours and 8 cotton qualities.
Overall the colour impression is eclectic and energised, yet interspersed with a calm quietness throughout and, since the main book behind this collection is available online,we can all leaf through it and learn more about lepidoptera, dreaming of fluttering butterflies in the early summer glow and getting inspired by their colourful and iridescent delicate wings flapping light.
