Metallics are irresistible shades, no matter in which discipline you may use them, from art and design to fashion. Art-wise, Stuart Semple, the British artist and painter, came up a while back with "Mirror", a visually striking chrome paint that loooks like mercury or like a liquid mirror.
The paint is made through 31 different processes with a high-tech procedure involving a pigment that is less than half the size of a red blood cell. You can discover more about it on Semple's Instagram page.
If you prefer fashion to art and gold to silver, get inspired by Elsa Schiaparelli's metallic swimwear from the '50s. This design was unique because, while it was still definitely a bathing suit, it looked sophisticated thanks to its asymmetrical cut evoking the lines and silhouettes of Haute Couture designs and in particular a one-shouldered chiton in gold lamé by Schiaparelli. The designer also channelled through it pure swimwear glamour à la Esther Williams in the musical Million Dollar Mermaid.
If Covid is stopping you from going on holiday and reach the beach and you don't want to think about the sea, don't despair but get inspired by a different metallic design, like the golden dress (by costume designer Shaukat) donned by Indian actress and dancer Laxmi Chhaya while performing an energetic choreography on the song "Jaan Pehechan Ho" by Bollywood music legend Mohammed Rafi in the 1965 Indian Bollywood thriller "Gumnaam", directed by Raja Nawathe.
The sleeveless dress with its ruffles covered with a beaded fringe was simply perfect for the dynamic choreography by Herman Benjamin, who (created quite a few choreographies for '60s-'70s Bollywood rock'n'roll films and) can be seen in this extract from the film, performing as the singer behind the microphone. As you may remember, this extract from the film was included in Terry Zwigoff's film "Ghost World", adapted from Daniel Clowes' eponymous graphic novel, which is turning 20 this year. Now continue this research into metallics finding more silver, metal or bronze inspirations in different disciplines and fields.
