It's Easter Monday and you may still have some time left from your Spring break to think about nice projects to work on during April. So, in case you're looking for a fashion project, here's a pattern for a double-skirted tunic dress in a delicate white and lavender shade (in this case matched with lavender gloves, lavender and blue necklace and a white hat) from 1960 by Italian designer Luciani.

The pattern was published in April 1960 by Annabella: the Italian fashion and lifestyle magazine suggested readers to make it all in one piece or to leave the top and skirt as separates, but to keep the three tiered effect formed by the peplum, overskirt and underskirt.

Basically, the design consists in a scoop collar sleeveless peplum top cinched at the waist with a fabric belt decorated with a fabric rose, and a double skirt with a fourreau underskirt and a pleated overskirt. The pleated sections for the top and the overskirt (pleat width: 1 cm) are the most complex parts of the design (and you may also find difficult making the deep dart in the front of the top) as you will have to pleat the fabric by yourself (fold paper into pleats, unfold the paper, apply the fabric, refold the paper and the fabric and iron them – for the pleating process check out also the final video in this post) or have the fabric pleated.

The magazine suggested to get more fabric than usual (around 4 metres; possibly cotton muslin and lightweight voile) because of the parts with the pleated motifs. Once you have pleated the fabric you will have to put it on the pattern and proceed cutting the fabric. In a way this design is a more complex version of a summer dress we published a while back.

The pattern [Parts for the dress: 1: shoulder strap (back); 2: shoulder strap (front); 3: half top (back); 4: half top (front; you can add a zip on the side of the top); 5: half belt; 6: half peplum (back); 7: half peplum (front); 8: half pleated overskirt; 9: half pleated underskirt (back); 10: half pleated underskirt (front). Patterns 3, 4, and 8 must be made with the pleated fabric] was designed for an Italian 46 size (size 14 in the UK; and 12 in the USA) and each square corresponds to 10 cm. Enjoy the Easter Monday project!
