As announced last December, many actresses will wear black gowns tonight to the 2018 Golden Globes to protest sexual harassement in Hollywood and show solidarity with victims of sexual misconduct. The invitation to wear black gowns has become part of the Time's Up initiative: created by prominent actresses and female agents, writers, directors and entertainment executives, Time's Up supports women who are bringing forward sexual harassment complaints and has a $14 million legal defense fund for less privileged victims.

After the Harvey Weinstein and other high-profile sex crime allegations were revealed more women have been speaking out against sexual harassment in different industries and "The Silence Breakers" Ashley Judd, Taylor Swift, Susan Fowler, Adama Iwu and "Isabel Pascual" (a pseudonym), women who sparked the anti-sexual harassment movement, were named in December 2017 TIME Magazine's Person of the Year.

The call to wear black may extend to other award ceremonies that will be taking place in the next few months including the Academy Awards. The black gowns are not conceived as symbols of mourning, but they are to be interpreted as metaphors to find solutions. It looks like the little black dress that brings back memories of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's will therefore get a new and more symbolic meaning and, who knows, may even start new campaigns on social media.

As you may remember, the #MeToo hashtag – first used last October by actress Alyssa Milano to encourage women who had experienced sexual mistreatment to come out on social media - got an amazing response, becoming an instant trending topic and helping people breaking silence on sexual assault.
