In yesterday's post we looked at two dresses designed by Adrian characterised by prints of lambs and roosters. Let's continue the Easter animal trend with this unlined kimono (hitoe) of figured crepe silk (mon chirimen) from the V&A collection, currently on display as part of the recently reopened Toshiba Gallery of Japanese Art at London's V&A.
Dating from around 1912-1926 and probably worn by a geisha, the kimono is characterised by autumnal motifs (so not strictly spring) of rabbits playing among grasses and flowers by the light of the moon, shining softy from the shoulder area (check out the ground fabric, woven with a motif of clouds to suggest a night sky).
The design was created employing yūzen free hand resist-dyeing while the faces and ears of the rabbits were embroidered in silk and metal-wrapped threads. Have a lovely Easter Monday!
