The fashion industry is going through some major changes, but it's not the only one: students currently enrolled in fashion design courses are wondering a lot about their identities and what they should become – Designers? Journalists? Editors? PR Officers? Consultants? Buyers? Stylists?
Will these figures still exist or will they be going through more exciting transformations or will we be needing entirely new figures? Besides, will the educational system have to change as well, maybe offering hybrid courses combining together disciplines such as art, science and technology?
I will be tackling some of these issues today at the Bath School of Art and Design where I will ask fashion and textile students if fashion is entering a brave new stage or if it's just heading towards a major implosion, while we will also look at innovative textile techniques and at young fashion designers working towards a brave new world.
You can join in the debate via Twitter using the hashtag #fashionbravenewworld. With many thanks to Kerry Curtis, Associate Dean and Head of Fashion, Textiles and Three Dimensional Design, for inviting me, and to Tim-Parry Williams, Course Leader MA Design (Fashion and Textiles), for organising the lecture.
