Happy New Year from Irenebrination!

It can be tricky to find the perfect image to wish a very Happy New Year to all Irenebrination readers, but this year Henri Raymond Fost (1905-1970) comes to our rescue.

Fost was a French stage and costume designer and also worked as illustrator. He debuted in 1928 at the Concert Mayol cabaret and worked for many Parisian theatres, including Casino de Paris, Théâtre de Nouvautés, Bouffes Parisiens, Magador, Châtelet, Opéra Comique and Lido among the others. He often collaborated with Jenny Carré forming a design duo very much appreciated in the music-hall scene around the '30s. Their styles was so similar that quite often it became difficult to attribute to one or the other artist their unsigned drawings.

This illustration by Fost is entitled "Haute Tension" (it dates from around the '50s) and summarises all the themes Irenebrination tackles – art, architecture, costume design, fashion and style. It also represents the figure at its centre as an antenna and a receiver, almost a generator of high tension similar to a Tesla coil. In a nutshell, the figure portrayed by Fost seems to have the same purposes, aims and objectives of this publication. Happy New Year!
