Textile Afternoon: Doretta Davanzo Poli @ The Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice

Sala Capitolare

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice has been organising Wednesday lectures about art, history and architecture. Today there is a special event about textiles led by Italian expert Doretta Davanzo Poli.

Founded as a Confraternity in 1478, the Scuola preserves collections of paintings, drawings and engravings, ceramics and sacred vestments. The Scuola is more famous, though, for the paintings Tintoretto did there from 1564 to 1588 for the Hall of the Hostel, the Upper and the Ground Floor Hall.

If you aren't able to join the lecture, visit Ms Poli's Facebook page - she quite often posts on it lovely pictures of her researches and findings like this red satin fabric from the 16th century embroidered with threaded gold designs based on the drawings by Mattio Pagan featured in the book L'honesto essempio (1550).
