Last Sunday's post was dedicated to Lila de Nobili's costumes for La Traviata and, bizarrelly enough, this arty Christmas card from the Rome-based Sartoria Tirelli arrived today. Inside there is a painting entitled “Nouveau Parnasse” by Lila de Nobili portraying Jupiter, Juno and Apollo.
Apollo is the most colourful character in the drawing and wears a costume slightly reminiscent of Alexandre Benois's designs for the Ballets Russes' Le Pavillon d'Armide (1907). Benois's costumes, inspired by the 18th century and the reign of Louis XIV, included indeed short skirts with fringes and appliquéd gold lame motifs that referenced the sun.
De Nobili's painting comes from Umberto Tirelli's archives, but there is another wonderful connection as well between the tailoring house and de Nobili. The current head of the tailoring house, Dino Trappetti, also collects illustrations by Marcel Vertès, Lila de Nobili's uncle. Can we maybe hope in an Easter card with a Vertès print?
