Abstract Collages, Urban Composites: Li Songsong Vs Felipe Oliveira Baptista

Internationally acclaimed Chinese artist Li Songsong has currently got a very interesting exhibition at Beijing's Pace Gallery (until 20th October) that features a rather futuristic installation, a sort of large tunnel made with aluminum panels that the artist covered in his trademark thick impasto oil paint.

In his works Li Songsong focuses on deconstructing and reconstructing images, warping and altering them through multiple layers of paint applied on canvas or aluminum panels. The final result is often abstract and collage-like since it features a variety of textures and techniques.

Felipe Oliveira Baptista employed the same deconstructing and reconstructing technique in his Spring/Summer 2013 collection. The main point was dissecting his garments, from a dress to a pair of trousers in a solid and sober colour such as olive green or navy, and putting them back together using different fabrics, altering in this way the shapes and obtaining asymmetrical silhouettes.

In Li Songsong's paintings and installations there is a sort of order in the disorder and the multiple colour schemes end up creating a neat patchwork forming a stimulating visual experience. The same thing happened in Felipe Oliveira Baptista's collection: the designer used different fabrics in the place of thick brushworks and the artist's speed of the stroke was instead evoked by the dynamic moods infused in the garments, especially in the leather trousers and tops inspired by BMX uniforms that added a sporty, graphic and urban mood to the collection.

As further inspirations along less arty (but equally intriguing) urban lines, I'm going to leave you today with 1983 cult film BMX Bandits by Brian Trenchard-Smith and with the track "Serious Drugs" by Scottish band BMX Bandits. Enjoy.
