Different countries have different techniques to decorate Easter eggs, with variations in colours and decorative elements that mix religious beliefs and pagan rituals, but you can find some of the most intricately decorated and brilliantly coloured eggs in Eastern European countries such as Romania.

According to the local traditions, Easter eggs bring good luck and their colours and patterns, often representing symbols such as the tree of life, the sun, the stars, the cross or leaves and spirals (in a nutshell, elements referring to myths of creations and symbols of life), have magic powers that can keep away evil and protect from unholy spirits.

Each egg is unique and can tell a story through the motifs that decorate it. These dense patterns form on wooden eggs or on emptied eggshell inspiring works of art that go beyond the folkloric legacy.

This is my small collection of Romanian eggs – spot the ones made using real eggshell and the wooden ones. Happy Easter!
