To tell you the truth the correct title for this post would be "sightseeing with Miţa" since, if I tried to cycle in Bucharest (more about it later, but I didn't take this trip for fashion reasons, though it will have some fashion-related connections at some point), I would more or less cause the same multiple accidents I would cause in London with the same deadly consequences.

The title of this post refers indeed to the first building I saw during my personal architectural tour on my first day in Bucharest, "Miţa the Cyclist's House".

The house was built in 1900 by architect N.C. Mihăescu. The Baroque style edifice with Art Nouveau influences features richly ornamented façades with balconies and bas-reliefs of cherubims, lions and cupids.

The house's name calls to mind the nickname of its owner Maria Mihăescu, the first woman to ride a biclycle in Bucharest.

My research trip to Romania was made possible through a journalistic grant from the Institutul Cultural Român (ICR – Romanian Cultural Institute), Bucharest.
