The two images in this post relate to two projects showcased at the Trieste-based Biennale exhibition. The first one is called the “Conchiglia” (Shell) dress; the second is instead entitled “L'altro” (The Other) and symbolises through the use of two different fabrics – sack cloth and organza – a dichotomic identity.
I found particularly interesting the materials used in these creations: the former recreates the shape of a shell employing sponges, foam, cardboard and ropes. The shell shape calls to mind Roberto Capucci's sculptural creations, but it also reminds the shape of an ammonite and the materials could be interpreted in this case as a sort of archaeological stratification recreated using cheap elements. The latter may be less complicated in terms of structure and materials employed, but the contrasts created by the two fabrics and the paint brushstrokes look nice.
The best thing about these designs is that they weren't created by students from fashion schools or colleges, but they were developed by teams of young students coordinated by a teacher from the art and fashion workshops of two Trieste-based high schools (the local Istituto Statale d'Arte and the Liceo Scientifico). Well done to them!
