Winners of the ITS#TEN competition were revealed last night in Trieste, after a catwalk show during which the finalists of the Fashion category presented their designs.
And the winners are:
ITS#Fashion
Fashion Collection of the Year Award: Shaun Samson
Diesel Award: Niran Avisar
Martin Margiela Award: Fah Chakshuvej
Modateca Award: Kevin Kramp
Fashion Special Prize and D-La Repubblica Award: Kristian Guerra
Skunkfunk Sustainability Award: Ruth Green
ITS#Accessories
Collection of the Year: Oliver Ruuger
YKK Award: Laura Amstein
ModAmont Award: Anna Schwamborn
ITS#Jewellery:
Swarovski Elements Award: Sarah Vedel Hurtigkarl and Raluca Grada
ITS#Photo
DiSaronno Photo Award: Nika Kupyrova
SVA Photoglobal Award: Gerardo Vizmanos
I totally agreed with the jury choices in some cases: I'm sure, for example, that Fah Chakshuvej with her talent for pattern cutting and textiles (she created her own fabric for her menswear collection) will be an asset at Maison Martin Margiela.
I was also happy to see a designer from Israel, Nisran Avisan, arriving on the scene, a young Italian designer getting two awards (unprecedented…) and a knitwear collection with a urban and social story behind it being acknowledged by a historical manufacturer like Deanna Ferretti and her Modateca.
For what regards the accessories, I couldn't be happier to see Oliver Kruuger winning, since he was among the students I interviewed a while back (together with two other finalists, Kat Marks for the Accessories category and Hanwen Shen for the Jewellery category).
It is difficult to disagree with Kei Kagami's choice for the YKK Award since Laura Amstein came up with a collection of polished and functional bags characterised by modern and clean shapes and silhouettes in which zips were turned into elegant design features.
I'm not 100% convinced about some of the winners and I'm curious to see how they will develop their work in future. Yet I genuinely hope that all the finalists and winners will find their path in life and use the opportunity that was offered them at its best. Above all, I hope they will all preserve the humbleness they have now since humbleness, humanity and kindness are at times rare virtues in the fashion industry. I will write more about the competition in the next few days: now it's time to ponder on the final results, put some order into my notes and ideas and, sadly, say goodbye to some of the inspiring people I met in Trieste.
