Bold, Vivid or Blurred: the Elad Lassry Palette

EladLassry_byABattista (2) If you're familiar with the work of Isreaeli artist Elad Lassry, you know how he often alters images taken from vintage magazines or film archives.

Born in Tel Aviv, but residing in Los Angeles, Lassry studied film at the California Institute of the Arts and then got an MFA from the University of Southern California.

Working in film and photography, Lassry usually creates  images with a pop quality about them.

They are indeed characterised by bold colours that give them a special dynamism and, in some cases, his compositions, photocollages and videos call back to mind commercial photographs (think about his photographs of cosmetics, for example, that wouldn't look out of place if they were used for adverts).

Through his altered images, blurred colours and double exposure, or pictures taken out of their contexts, Lassry often confuses the perceptions of the viewers.

Lassry recently had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art and at the David Kordansky Gallery, while he's currently showcasing two works at the Venice Biennale, a print entitled “Purple Hats” (2011) and a film ("Untitled").

EladLassry_byABattista The former displays some strong fashion connections since it looks like an illustration taken from a fashion magazine from the '30s, while the latter features six performers doing a dance routine clad in yellow and green bodysuits.

While the artist stated a while back that among his early inspirations there is a poster of Richard Avedon’s famous photograph of Nastassja Kinski with a snake, sometimes you feel you can detect other influences such as Erwin Blumenfeld's palette or Paul Outerbridge's shades, graphic effects and carbro colour process.

If you're a fashion designer and you like playing with colours, I would urge you to have a look at Lassry's works, I'm sure his images and prints would provide interesting inspirations for a fashion collection.
