Happy New Year from Irenebrination (and René Gruau!)

GruauLido_1971 New Year’s Day is obviously a cause for celebration.

In my case it’s a double cause for celebration since it’s also my birthday.

So I’ll use this excuse to celebrate twice with an illustration (following the thread that started with yesterday’s post).

The illustration featured in today's post is a detail from a 1971 René Gruau poster for Paris’ Lido.

Gruau’s works (and we’ll discover more about them soon, promise!) had a special joie de vivre about them: they were very elegant, glamorous, spectacular and erotic, they portrayed an ever-changing ideal of female beauty while hinting at an extraordinary sensuality.

This poster makes me think about exuberant parties and balls, about a world of luxury and grandeur evoked through bold and incisive yet minimalist lines, while it’s electric blue background calls to mind René Gruau’s blue eyes, always looking ahead, anticipating trends and styles.

So this is my wish for you all in 2011: always look ahead (but don't forget your past and where you came from..) since only truly visionary people can bring changes into this world that can have an impact on our lives. Happy New Year, Happy New Decade.
