If you are a passionate fan of the fashion and film connection, you may have noticed by now that the focus recently moved from arty to blatantly commercial connections.
Fifty years ago a jumper worn by Marcello Mastroianni in Fellini's La dolce vita launched a style and gave the name to a garment, now it’s all about placing a product in your film and essentially trying to sell it.
Italian director Luca Guadagnino though went even further: for his latest film Io sono l’amore, Guadagnino opted for a Raf Simons for Jil Sander’s wardrobe for Tilda Swinton and worked on the male actors’ looks with Silvia Venturini Fendi.
As he proved yesterday in Venice, Guadagnino is swearing style and commercial allegiance to Jil Sander.
The director wore a floral T-shirt from Jil Sander’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection at the press photocall, while for the opening night ceremony he tried to hurt the retina of the audience and of the many film fans gathered to take pictures of their favourite actors and actresses, choosing a neon pink jacket from the same collection (while Portman tried to camouflage herself with the red carpet in her blood red Rodarte number – what a clever and 'subtle' connection with the blood in Black Swan).
Guadagnino also accessorised himself not with a bag for the occasion, but with Silvia Venturini Fendi, because it's always good to have a fashion designer next to you in case of wardrobe malfunctions and other assorted style problems.
The director indirectly referenced his own film with his style choices, yet that wasn't the news of the day.
Guadagnino confirmed indeed he will co-produce with Marco Morabito the American remake of Suspiria directed by David Gordon Green (Italian film production house First Sun, co-founded by Silvia Venturini Fendi, acquired in 2007 the rights to Argento's cult film) and that the film will be shot in 2011.
I have already hinted in a previous post at the fact that Suspiria may soon be turned into an orgy of designer clothes and I honestly think that's what will happen. So far we know that, though it won’t be in 3D as Guadagnino highlighted, it may be branded Jil Sander in some ways, which means it will suddenly become a stylish and rarefied film for fashion fans (possibly accompanied by a Suspiria-inspired Jil Sander line?).
We will just have to wait and see. A few weeks ago Morabito claimed Argento is accepting the idea of the film remake because he knows there is no way the new Suspiria will be better than the original.
In the meantime, Argento fans have already started loading their guns, though they will be happy to know that no, Marilyn Manson is not going to be in the cast (because, let’s face it, he wouldn’t look good in Jil Sander…).
