If you work in the fashion industry, the word “freedom” at the moment conjures up at least one long weekend of rest, the light at the end of the tunnel after a relentlessly tiring month of endless nomadic life spent at the main fashion week events, watching thousands of models walking down the runways.
Yet this simple word has got very different meanings for each of us: freedom is a human right, a vital need, a metaphysically and philosophically intense topic.
For Los Angeles-based photographer Robin Black, freedom is such a vast concept that she decided to let the contributors to the Spring 2010 issue of the magazine she launched last year, The New Tough, to express through words and images their ideas about this topic.
This is why the latest issue of the magazine – just uploaded on the Internet – could be considered as a journey through the various definitions of freedom: illustrator John Paul Thurlow found a deeper meaning to it while drawing covers inspired by style and fashion magazines, trying to unveil behind their glamorous façades society’s imperfections; model Miss Jodie discovered instead it can be a life-changing journey while she was on the set of Bobby Bailey's documentary about malaria When the Night Comes.
As usual the magazine features a strong photographic section with Hilary Walsh's intense personal project involving her muse Lola Albright; John Arsenault's visual monologue on sexuality and Leon Diaper’s photo reportage (with a text by James Ranson) about the residents of ghost town Camp Dunlap, also known as “Slab City”.
The new issue also features two very thought-provoking interviews, the first with Georgina Spelvin, who starred in the 70s porn Devil in Miss Jones, and the second with criminal defense attorney J. Tony Serra, whose words of wisdom in favour of civil rights and against capitalism and passivity towards the government will hopefully inspire many readers. Thought you knew what "freedom" really meant? Well, you may want to reconsider and maybe broaden your own definition of this word after checking out the Spring 2010 issue of The New Tough.
