TheCount_Chaplin Today’s project will probably turn handy if you travel a lot and like carrying with you a few accessories to dress up an outfit, but want to avoid to carry extra weight in your case, or if you like films and want to wear something “cinematic” and unique.

Right then, since we are ready to start, 8mm and 16mm film collectors may want to avert their gaze from this post now. What follows may indeed be too painful to endure since it implies destroying an old film.

FilmNecklace1_byABattista In my case I got an old Charlie Chaplin short entitled The Count (1916) that was lying around the house.

In the short Chaplin plays a tailor’s assistant, a sort of wonderful fashion connection and even a better reason to, well, destroy or rather recycle the film and make it more “fashionable”.

So the first step was cutting the film into strips, some longer other shorter, making sure that the former reached behind my neck.

Some films are old and fragile, so make sure you get one that is not so worn out to avoid it breaking.

FilmNecklace2_byABattista When you cut the film into strips remember also to round off the sharp corners of the strips to make sure you avoid unwanted and unpleasant slashes.

Take one end of the strips and start threading a very thin satin ribbon (or, as I did, a very thin plastic coated metal thread that you can usually find in DIY shops – if you opt for the latter make sure you also have proper necklace ends and fasteners such as catch triggers) through one of the sprocket holes.

Get the other end of the strips and only thread the ribbon or metal thread through the longer ends of the film strips, leave the shorter strips hanging and let them curl up on one side (the film will naturally and nicely curl up after having been rolled up on its plastic spool for years).

To get maximum effect from such a light necklace wear it on a white T-shirt or tank top.
