There is nothing worse than seeing people having a great time and not being able to join in or being invited to a party and being left in a corner while the rest of the guests are having fun.
This was exactly how I felt during Umit Benan’s catwalk show. Despite the restaurant room of Florence's Santa Maria Novella railway station proved to be an interesting location and the theme of the new collection, “Retired Rockers”, was rather exciting, there were a few major faults in the presentation.
Expectations were high about Benan’s new collection after he won the ready-to-wear category of the "Who's On Next?" menswear competition last July.
Excitement was palpable when the black curtain that covered the centre of the room raised revealing a long table of partying retired rockers and young groupies having fun, drinking, joking and taking silly pics of themselves on digital cameras.
Yet once we discovered the party that was taking place in front of us (the audience basically surrounded the table) didn’t in fact involve any of us and it also didn’t allow us to see too well the clothes worn, things got uncomfortably boring.
In a way it was a shame since Benan seems to know enough about the cut of men’s clothes (excelling in jackets, coats and pea-coats, especially when matched with cashmere leggings) and also shows a certain attention for fabrics and materials as the alpaca, velvet, cashmere, light denim and leopard printed pony skin employed for his A/W 2010-11 collection proved.
What detracted from the collection was definitely the presentation: if the group of retired rockers meeting every month in the fictional East Village club recreated in front of us would have maybe tried to involve also the audience in their little party and if fewer (blowjob willing) groupies had been involved, things would have been better and the presentation would have proved more refreshing.
