KimonoFusion_Jan2010 I've always been fascinated by kimonos: one of my favourite fashion moments is indeed the boom in Oriental fashion in the early 1900s.

Kimonos were already popular in
France at the end of the 19th century, but they were mainly used as
indoor garments, being conceived as luxurious at-home silk or satin
gowns, often embroidered with traditional motifs such as symbolic
chrysanthemum patterns.

Then the Ballets Russes arrived and, inspired by the trends in Oriental fashion, Paul Poiret created the "kimono coat”, a garment that managed to capture
women’s attention, imagination and thirst for everything exotic, erotic
and sensual, becoming a very popular item of clothing.

Having such an obsession with kimonos, fashion and kimono coats, you can easily guess why one of the highlights of my Stockholm trip was viting the "Kimono Fusion" exhibition at the Östasiatiska Museet.

Getting there while outside was -8°C and in the middle of a light snow (or rather ice) storm was rather adventurous and I honestly thought I was going to die before reaching the door of the museum. It was only after regaining the sensitivity in my hands thanks to a much-needed jasmine tea that I managed to have a look around.

I'm posting today a few short videos of the exhibition, from the entrance (first video) through to the main room (second video) with vintage silk kimonos, Shin Tanaka's “Street Origami”, Takuya Angel's designs and Shojono Tom's “753 Kimono” collages and to the final installations.

The third part of the exhibition was indeed divided into two installations, one featuring Kunihiko Morinaga's designs for label Anrealage, and the other featuring Suzuki Takayuki's "Tangled" collection. You can read more about the exhibition (and also see further images) in my exhibition review on Dazed Digital.
