Being Italian, when someone mentions the word “heretic” I automatically think about Girolamo Savonarola, the Dominican monk and preacher excommunicated and executed in 1498, philosopher, mathematician and astronomer Giordano Bruno and physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei, both accused of heresy because of their heliocentric beliefs.
After seeing the second issue of The New Tough, currently available to read online, my perspective on heretics and, well, their personal styles has somehow changed and expanded quite a bit.
In her opening note editor Robin Black explains how this word is employed in this issue in a rather interesting way: heresy turns indeed into a weapon to challenge the established beliefs in our lives and free our own minds.
With this purpose in mind Black has included in the new issue features about very challenging artists. There is an essay about black metal, an interview with artist Andres Serrano, the controversial author of Piss Christ and of the series "The Morgue" and "Shit Show", and with The Voidoid’s Richard Hell (fairly jealous about this interview since I often tried to speak to him and never managed to…), a piece accompanied by an excerpt from his autobiography.
The online magazine also features quite a few photo shoots, from a fashion based one revolving about the theme of selling your soul for gold chains, to more arty ones such as Frankie Nazardo's scarily fascinating "The Bone Church".
So well done to Robin! Looking forward to seeing the next issue of the magazine, I'm sure it will be even more intriguing than this one.
