I admit it: I’m extremely lazy and disorganised when it comes to sending Christmas and New Year greetings and basically end up forgetting to post my cards.
Yet I love receiving festive messages by email or finding cards in the post.
I think I developed this obsession when I was in school and, through my English language teacher, I built a sort of endless network of pen pals from all over the world. It was great at the time getting letters and sometimes unusual presents from friends living miles and miles away and Christmas was an extremely exciting time of the year with cards printed in all sorts of languages filling up my mailbox.
This is the first Happy New Year card I received this year, sent from photographer Amy Gwaktin: it’s a picture of model Tracy Onyecachukwu by Gwatkin and Anna Leader. Some of you may have recognised the technicolour glasses as one of Fred Butler's unmistakeable creations, while nails are from WAH Nails and make-up by Megumi Matsuno.
It’s quite a joyful image and it has put me in a good mood. I think I’ll pretend it’s also my first card for my next birthday (yes, I was born on 1st January).
