I’m sometimes amazed at the fake Christmas happiness some retailers manage to create with incredible window displays, excessive amounts of sparkling lights, mechanised Santas and reindeer and even singing elves.
I guess that if they would do it with a sprinkle of genuine Christmas spirit it wouldn’t look that bad after all.
Instead you can always sense a certain underlying fakeness in all the tinsel, artificial snow and glittery frost in shop windows and assorted Christmas displays.
For this year the Moschino store in Via Sant’Andrea 12 in Milan, right in the heart of the fashion district, went instead for a more minimal and, well, “psychoanalytical” Christmas display.
The effects of the financial downturn seem to have depressed poor Santa Claus, who has turned to a glamorous psychoanalyst dummy (graduated from the “University of Moschino…), obviously dressed in an edgy Moschino trouser suit and sandals.
It’s not only the crisis that’s affecting poor Santa, though: he is also depressed by the increased demand in innovative technological products. The wide range of stuff available makes him so anxious he has turned to professional help.
The idea for the window display came from art director Jo-Ann Tan, famous for creating avant-garde designs for the Moschino stores, and Rossella Jardini, the brand’s designer.
While I find the slightly theatrical and surreal (well, that’s understandable, this is Moschino after all…) shop window slightly less fake than the ones with tons of sparkling lights, I’m still not too sure about it.: yes, there’s drama, humour and comedy in it, but I don’t think there is enough provocation or communicative power as there may have been.
After all, if Santa needs a psychoanalyst who should the thousands of people who lost heir jobs in the last few years, are at present skint or have been unemployed for a while turn to?
