While chatting with Angela Picozzi from Mantua-based company Castor about Giles being produced in Italy and showcasing his next collection at January's Pitti, many other issues came up to my mind.
Angela explained me a few issues concerning the production of the Giles collection, and this made me think about many other young designers who graduate every year from universities and colleges scattered across the globe.
Indeed, I have met so far quite a few graduates interested in launching their own collections but not too sure about where to start from.
I asked Angela if her company would be interested in organising seminars at different institutions to help young designers and she sounded pretty keen and also left me with some words of wisdom I'd like to share with you today.
“We would definitely be interested in meeting students and explaining them the difficulties implied in this job. It would be great and I would definitely do it," Angela told me, "In the 80s my mother had a bigger company and used to go to Kingston College, one of the few British institutions focusing its attention on products and also offering insights on fabrics and textiles. Students used to do catwalk shows at the end of the year and companies picked one or two graduates to include them in the style team. One of them was 16 at the time and she is still working with us. Nowadays there are all these competitions that promote new young fashion designers who want to make their own collections without having any experience and I think that's a shame, because the trick is to gain as much experience as you can and learn about vital rules such as time frames, fabrics and fits, before developing your own brand, otherwise companies will never invest in your work.”
