MaidenArt_1 Four years ago I represented my region, Abruzzo, in the literature category at the Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean that took place in Naples.

Among the artists invited to showcase their work during the Biennial there was also Maristella Colombo who presented a catwalk show with dresses entirely made of Japanese paper.

I must admit that when I recently met again Maristella in her new incarnation as accessory designer I vaguely remembered that specific performance, but I didn't remember her name.

MaidenArt_2 It took me a while to connect that event buried in my memory with her name (I've never been good with names…), but, after I did, I was very happy to know that she has been working on quite a few projects (check out her site to know more about her work as visual artist and photographer) and has developed a label, Maiden Art, with Gabriele Negri.

The label is at present a platform for their jewels and small accessories, but Gabriele and Maristella are also working on different projects, such as a magazine and a record label.

MaidenArt_3 Gabriele is indeed also a musician and sees the opportunity of creating a record label as a way to represent their work and artistic beliefs also through sounds.

At the moment they are looking for international bands to feature on a compilation album they are working on.

What follows is a short Q&A with Gabriele and Maristella, but you can read more about their conceptual designs and avant-garde projects in my interview with them on Dazed Digital.

MaidenArt_4 Question: How does collaborating together as a design duo work for you?
Gabriele Negri: We like it a lot since there is no proper division into roles, but we complement each other rather well. Since we started Maiden Art three years ago it has been even more exciting working together and this is also reflects upon our accessories that have turned into elaborate pieces.

Q: How many collections do you design every year?
Gabriele Negri: Though we follow the seasons, we feel that many of our creations are timeless and we are always keen on producing again a few of our signature designs, updating them a bit. We like experimenting in all our collections and discovering materials that are not often employed for jewellery and small accessories.

Q: Do you have any special future projects?
Maristella Colombo: We would like to open our own shop and use it as a space for art events. Maiden Art is a sort of collective entity and reunites together many different projects. One day we would like to collaborate with other designers and share ideas with them. We are also working on launching a magazine that could promote the work of many different international artists.
