Marang Stockholm Fashion Week has become in recent years one of the not-to-miss fashion appointments of the year.

Coordinated by the Swedish Fashion Council and organised four times a year, the event always features a rich programme that includes catwalk and trade shows, exhibitions and presentations.

Matilda Wendelboe is one of the designers who will present her work through a special exhibition event this week.

A sort of dichotomic principle characterises Wendelboe’s designs: though her shapes and silhouettes present sharp and almost architectural lines, the designer uses soft fabrics and at times even pleated motifs à la Mariano Fortuny to make her pieces look softer and slightly more romantic.

Wendelboe has recently been nominated for the Swedish Fashion Council prize “Rookies & Players Company of the year” along with two other designers, Patouf and Farzan Esfahani.

The winner will be announced tomorrow evening after a special exhibition and guerrilla store opening at Stockholm’s Design Galleriet. While waiting for the name of the winner to be announced, you can read the following Q&A with Matilda Wendelboe.

Saranda Question: What do you think about Stockholm Fashion Week?
Matilda Wendelboe: This is the 4th time I participate and it’s a very good event since it allows designers to meet many representatives of the Swedish press and buyers.

Question: Is there a special Swedish designer who inspires you or that you particularly like?
Matilda Wendelboe: My biggest inspiration is the amazing jewellery designer Lo, but when it comes to fashion I like Van Deurs and Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair  a lot. Besides I also love Helena Hörstedt, I think she is fantastic!

Question: What inspired the collection you will showcase at Stockholm Fashion Week?
Matilda Wendelboe: My new collection features 15 pieces and was inspired by the late singer Odetta and the new industrial revolution that is at present going on, in a nutshell the process behind the “Cradle to Cradle” principle. These two inspirations gave me strong hopes for a brighter future and I tried to inject them into my collection.

Question: What kind of fabrics did you choose for your new collection?
Matilda Wendelboe: Shiny silk, light wool and heavy hemp.

Question: Some of your designs are characterised by precise and almost architectural shapes, does architecture inspire you?
Matilda Wendelboe: Yes, it does and I am glad you noticed that! Some architects manage to make heavy buildings look light and can combine heart touching beauty with practical solutions and that’s what I’m always looking for in my designs.
