Colour coded weekend: pencil necklace

Pencil1_AB We all have materials lying around the house, from scraps of fabric and ribbons to maybe rather different materials that don’t have many connections with the world of fashion.

I have had coloured pencils lying in a drawer for years and, a while back, I also found some leftover wooden beads from a necklace I did when I was a young girl (I knew they would have turned handy at some point…).

I have been thinking for a while about what to do with the two and had a necklace in mind, so this morning I decided to set myself to work and make something extraordinarily cheerful.

Pencil2_bis_AB I have to confess I’m not good at using any hardware tools, but if such tools are needed to make my own accessories, I can turn into a hardware tool wizard (well, almost…). So, after finding at my brother’s a set of hand drills, I set down to work.

I used the drill with the thinnest bit to make holes in the pencils to avoid splitting the wood. If you want to do the same necklace remember that the pencils must be reasonably short, since you want to avoid killing yourself while wearing the necklace.

Pencil2_AB Once I finished drilling the holes I started threading the wooden beads, alternating them to the pencils. I had a mix of wooden beads, in different sizes and shapes, from cylindrical to round beads, so I decided to use what I had but selected the shapes according to the colours.

To make this necklace I used a stretch silicone thread, but if you don’t have it, you can use a piece of elastic thread, remember though that it must be rather thick to support the weight of the pencils and beads.

Enjoy it and don't forget that, when you get tired of this necklace, you can disassemble it and use the pencils to draw and take notes.
