I quite like geometrical and precisely neat and clean lines, but I also love clothes in which pleated and draped elements form clever motifs.
The problem is that the two concepts don't go well together in just one design. Indeed the former implies pure and stripped down shapes, the latter means using a lot of fabric to create the right shapes, twists, knots and motifs while avoiding to unbalance the proportions of a design.
Despite my rather difficult dichotomic tastes, I think I have found a good balance in Noir et Blanc's S/S 09 collection.
This Stockholm-based Swedish brand was founded just two years ago by designers Petra Thoms and Linnea Carlgren.
Actually the design duo seem to be quite at ease with dichotomies as their creations are often characterised by strong silhouettes/geometrical shapes and soft/glossy fabrics.
The duo's S/S 09 collection features for example a white dress with a black net-like geometrical print and a three dimensional ruffle-like motif created by applying rows of folded fabric on the front of the dress.
The same appliquéd motif, this time in a sort of glossy fabric, appears on a matte black skirt, giving the illusion of an almost intrecciato-like effect.
The summer collection also features an interesting white skirt with prints of black ink stains and a fan like ruffled motif on the front and a skirt in which the Schiaparelli's skeleton design is recreated by soft drapes.
Noir et Blanc will be among the designers showcasing their work at Kotyr's catwalk, that will take place on 13th May at Stockholm's Nordic Light Hotel.
The catwalk will feature 17 young Swedish designers, among them there are also two of my favourite ones, Camilla Wellton and Mori & Mimosa.
You can actually see one of the dresses the latter are preparing for their catwalk here. It's a white version decorated with chains of black keys of the peach dress for the Rookies Coaching Rookies project the duo took part in a while back. I simply love the little pleated sleeves and the dangling keys; for some reasons the dress makes me think about Alice in Wonderland. I'm curious to know where the girls took their inspiration from for this design.
