One of my favourite books published in 2008 was IKé UDé’s Style File which I reviewed in a previous post.

UDé recently opened his first solo exhibition, “Paris Hilton: Fantasy and Simulacrum”, at Oslo’s Stenersen Museum. The event is a sort of conversation between the artist’s alter ego, Visconti, and Paris Hilton and you can read a longer piece about it in my interview with IKé on Dazed Digital. In the meantime, enjoy this brief Q&A with UDé.

Question: How would you describe Style File and do you think it can help readers to learn more about style?
IKè UDé: It is a smart, erudite volume. Those who are intellectually lethargic
can easily enjoy the images; conversely, for those who are partial to
the pleasure of text, wit, elegance, beauty and piquant images, Style File is a bonanza, a godsend.

Q: What does style mean to you and how would you define your personal style?
IU:
Style means freedom, it means independence, it means self-possession,
ineffable control of one’s sovereignty and ultimately the triumph of
what I call a minority-of-one over an obscene, indistinguishable
herd—washed or unwashed.

Q: Who or what inspires you in your life?
IU: Knowledge and respect of boundaries and yet the mysterious thrill of playing and elegantly undermining those boundaries with all due respect.

IKé UDé’s “Paris Hilton: Fantasy and Simulacrum” is at the Stenersen Museum, Oslo, Norway, until 10th May 2009.
