The whiff of a greener life: Le Labo

Trying to adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle has recently been on many fashionistas’ agendas: buying quality clothes that last or recycling clothes and accessories are just a few of the tips that quite a few people have been following to reduce their impact on the planet. Cosmetic companies have imitated the model launched by the fashion industry, manufacturing make-up products as simply formulated and as ecologically sound as possible with reduced packages. Yet there are only a few perfume companies that have been contributing to a greener lifestyle. Le Labo is one of them.

Launched two years ago by friends and ex-corporate fragrance executives Edouard Roschi and Fabrice Penot, the company has a strong green ethos. Its unique fragrances are all produced by hand, on demand and in their exclusive open public laboratory with ingredients flown in from Grasse, the world’s perfume capital. Le Labo also gives the opportunity to its customers to have their perfume bottles refilled and relabelled, saving in this way a bit of money while at the same time reducing pollution.

The range of fragrances goes from fresh and soft (Ambrette 9) to strong and masculine (Vetiver 46); from delicious and fruity (Fleur d’Oranger 27) to sexy and sensual (Patchouli 24). Among the most original Le Labo products there are a perfumed notepad that releases the cult scent Santal 26 once its surface is scratched, and a miniature perfume laboratory featuring 40 fundamental natural essences used in perfumery. The aim of this mini-lab is to help training and developing the sense of smell and refining one’s olfactory buds.

Le Labo main boutiques are based in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo and are all characterised by the same design, an inviting long counter with chairs that allow the visitor to sit down, relax and try the various scents. Le Labo products are also sold in selected department stores across Europe or can be ordered online via Paris-based Colette. The ethical fragrance revolution has just started, thank Le Labo for it.
